Vellum
The vellum of a first edition
of Urquhart’s Jewel from 1652
is so soft it could bruise or bleed.
The gralloched lamb whose skin
was grafted onto these teeming pages
gathers the wool of my mind.
I stop by Cromarty’s fields
see all of the sheep
that never helped me sleep
and crows fly across the shadow
draped land like family Bibles
thrown twirling through the air.
