He stands by her statue in a photograph,
neophyte Atlas neck-high to her feet,
shouldering devotion to the surrogate
mother of the De La Salle Juniorate.
Fifty years on, the Victorian house
he lived in for almost four years has gone
to its grave. The studies and dormitories,
the innumerable nooks and passages,
the wooden floors buffed to a metaphor
of light by the dustered gliding of boys
have crumbled into whispering wormholes,
the foundations of a school theatre.
Only the statue remains, inscrutable
figure pointing to the path unchosen.
