She was Twenty
She was twenty,
beautiful
as only twenty can be.
She strode in and out,
out and in,
at his
studio door that clicked to,
shut out the street noises
so completely.
Was there,
and not there
and there again
in his bed, in his dreams.
And when he was ninety and more,
then ninety and less,
and the obituaries
and the biographies written,
and she was not to be found there,
it felt almost right to her,
almost true to how it had been,
in his bed,
in his dreams.
