Monks Bar, York
No public finalé
for the unfortunates
who climbed
these winding steps;
no comfort
in the open skies
above, or friends
who came to stand
and watch. Here
there's barely room
to swing an axe.
An intimate
last moment, then
for the dead man walking
with his executioner, no
onlookers, just stones
which soaked up prayers
through centuries
of final words
and pigeons
nesting up against
the old glass
of the window slit
indifferent to humankind
within. An arm's reach
from the execution block
the parent bird looks
only at her nestling.
New life huddles
in a clutch of dirt
and feathers
tender beaked;
above its head
a glimpse of sky.
