Annoncenteil Arbeiten auf/mit papier by jochen gerz. luchterhand. available from 41 rue buffon 75, paris 5, france. selected gerz texts from recent years - concrete is the all embracing term for his work, although a lot of it just cannot be defined. type work, photo work, extracts from his visual novels, projects involving the countryside etc. gerz spans it all, a very open approach to language and the areas beyond words. well worth getting hold of.
Asa seiichi niikuni. 4-4 yukigaya otsuka, otaku, 145 tokyo, japan. from the association for study of arts spatial isme/concrete poetry comes a great little mag that really annoys me, the bulk of it, being concrete, can be enjoyed but its those damn interesting looking articles in japanese text that get me.
vol 4 no 4 niikuni & garnier's japanese/french micropoems, de vree, solt, clavin, bory, gerz, names known to concrete represented with typical works. the main interest of this issue however lies in the japanese items, must be seen: kyuyo/ yoshizawa/ kamimura/ etc.
vol 5 no 5 a review with photos of the dutch concrete exhibition/ harry guest/ valoch/ more french/ japanese work from garnier & niikuni/ blaine/ finlay/ sharkey/ bony/ de vree/ ulrichs/ and again a very exciting set by the japanese. asa is for sure a mag to be investigated.

Bloknoot (6) f5. ruud van aarssen. van dortmondtstraat 19, arnhem, holland. a very large hand made (and well too) mimeo mag of new poetries. perhaps not as solid as a mag such as subvers but containing some really worthwhile work from all over. language doesnt matter here, a true international concrete mag. including: stickons by klaus groh/ mike gibbs file card texts etc/ van den leest's number poems/ robert filliou/ jiri valoch/ todorovic/ pull outs by pier van dijk/ de rook/ & countless others. well worth getting hold of if concrete interests you.

The Classic (vol 3 no 4) 45c. barney simon. po box 23643, joubert park, johannesburg, rsa. a kind of south african transatlantic review in format and style of contents. not by any means as good as tr but still worthy: de wet/ fugard/ serote/ dikobe/ poetry, prose & photos.
Cyborg (4) 50c. juan jose cagigal ulloa. avda martires 8-10-2, reus, spain. spanish text sf poetry/prose & new writings magazine. could be better produced. illustrated.

Dutch Quarterly Review (1) M00. m buning. po box 7339, amsterdam, holland. a well printed magazine of "anglo-american letters", english text. dry as a dust bowl, for super academics only: literature & linguistics by roger fowler/ 18th C english literature/ reviews of shakespeare in german, james joyce, wilfred oven, hopkins, etc etc.
Dutch Railway System by g.j.de rook. po box 14012, utrecht, holland. normally i'm a great fan of de rooks dadaistic-concrete experiments (his white poems are still the best thing to come out of holland) but this time its too complicated and too drawn out to work, to destructive almost. de rook has set out around the dutch railways (& since its a small country you can cover the lot in a week) sat upon each train with pen held to paper, not moving his hand, & let the trains movements decide a pattern. the results are here complete with a map, timetable & notes. ho hum. i wonder why so many dutchmen write their books in english?
Escape (vol 4 no 1) 50p. e.p.f.van hese. grote kruisstraat 2-1, room 307, groningen 1, holland. "magazine for dutch students in english" full spectrum of material: auberon waugh/ anthony green wood reviews h wilson's autobio/ poetry/ short stories/ crosswords - litho.
five poemas visuales by clemente padin. ediciones ovum 10. casilla de correo 2454, la cruz de carrasco, montivideo, uruguay. padin's concrete postcards deal with the letter as sign & its destruction & reformation. this series really couldnt go beyond 5 examples.
Fox (6) bob rivera. palantir, postbus 3945, amsterdam, holland. "amsterdam's only english language underground magazine". quite a large electro-stencil mimeo mag, full of illustrations and containing the best and largest section of mimeo multi colour work i've ever seen. non violence/ poetry/ drugs/ capitalism/ provos/ kabouters/ sex/ reviews, news & notes.

Hoop (Hope) by ugstikker. exp/press card 1. visual poem postcard. available from de rook, po box 14012, utrecht, holland.
Humandesign (7/8) 1-300. adriano foschi. lem editrice, 20144 milano (1), viale coni zugna 58, italy. italian text avanteguarde arts mag, well worth getting hold of for a view from another side, deals with the way way out, spacial, concrete, kinetics etc etc. try it if you can.
Ikon (vol 2 no 3) 17p. stephen hayes. po box 9219,eros, windhoek, s.w.a. radical christianity, not as wild as our own roadrunner but with enough thought provoking material to make it a worth while buy. printed.

Montagna Rossa (1971) 82.50. franco beltrametti. cp n3 riva sv / 6826 Switzerland. "news from this other world, an inventory in 9 languages" which means either you're worried since you cant read it all or happy since you can read at least some. the stuff inside in english is top notch, making the mag well worth sending all that way for. its a solid mimeo, very well done indeed. including: killer/ welch/ corman/ han shan translation by snyder/ ginsberg/ harry hoogstraten/ phil whalen/ lijn's poem machine in article & photo/ in all its the beats back again.
Ophir (14) 35c. peter horn/waiter rounders. po box 3846, pretoria, rsa (uk. available from martin booth at the sceptre press, 15 keats way, rushden). a neat small multi racial letter press mag. good stuff here although the same names each issue. incl: fugard/ jensma/ etc.
no 15 martin booth/ wopko jensma/ horn/ brian keith green/ gwala/ livingstone & others.
Ovum 10 clemente padin. an sub: 4 dirs. casilla de correo 2454, la cruz de carrasco, montivideo, uruguay. a bunch of past issues, all still available, arrived recently. Ovum 10 is a small litho concrete poe try mag, and its good to see another side of the coin in style. south america is after all orfe of the two main places that concrete came from, although the stuff in ovum 10 is by no means as purist as that of the brazillians.
no 1 vigo's visual number poems/ gandolfo/ julien blaine/ germany arcelli/ & others.
no 3 sarenco/ luigi ferro/ oliva's famous map poem/ milan grygar/ & others.
no 7 semiotic poetry: where the word/letter is replaced by a sign.
no 4 tied with string: dick higgins art icle/ spatola/ gerz/ blaine/ todorovic on signalism/etc.
no 5 the late josef honys/ hugh fox/ canot's amazing new map of south america/etc.
no 6 the south american version of taking large letters around the countryside and photographing them in numerous locations.
no 9 tucuman arde. Spanish text. no visuals.
Palantir postbus 3925, amsterdam, holland. dutch text underground news & notes.
Panggg (4) 1dm. nurenberg, kopernikusstr. 4, germany. german text u/g paper now into large tabloid format, glossy paper, a fine job complete with the freak brothers translated.
Penelope (5) agustin del rosario. apartado postal 2968, panama 3, panama, Spanish text mimeo poetry mag, rough in format but it comes from a long way off.
Poet (march 71) israeli number. guest edited by waiter m barzelay. Poet is a rough looking mag indeed although it does sometimes come up with a good issue. this one is one of those. copies available from the guest editor at 60 hayarkon, tel-aviv, israel or for those that want to join the "world poetry societ intercontinental" send £3 to krishna srinivas, 16 dandapani st, madras 17, india and you'll get a subscription as part of your membership.
A poem a day postcard by g.j.de rook. exp/press card 2, po box 14012, utrecht, holland. very lightweight. Exp/press card 3 "try to!" by klaus groh. the best postcard yet.
* Real Free Press (4) 30p. r.olaf stoop. runstraat 31, amstrdam. the best u/g comic on the market - all the good strips etc end up here, often in dutch translation but mostly in the original english. in this issue: the fabulous furry freak brothers/ s clay wilson/ r cobb/ & much much more.
Real Free Press Ehe-Catl (1) 40p. same format as the regular paper but dealing in the many versions of "mutt & jeff". all in dutch which is a pity from my point of view but good for holland.
Resurrection Amodulo by jochen gerz. edizioni amodulo, viale stazione 23-1-25100 brescia, italy. a small collection of gerz's direct text poems, mostly in french & english. this is the side of gerz's work that doesnt really appeal to me "an artist is an artist is an artist is not a whore" etc. many seem pointless to those outside gerz's own head, but perhaps thats the point.
Signal miroljub todorovic. dobrinjska 3, 11000 beograd, yugoslavia. "international review for signalist research" (an article on signalism & examples of work appeared in second aeon 14)signalism is a branch of concrete poetry dealing with the mathematical & machine made side of things. the magazine is a mixture of international concrete poets plus local "signalists". its a good mag for concrete but todorovic tends to put in too much of his own work & rates the work of many of his local signalists too highly for the trite stuff they turn out. but dont let that put you off, its a hell of a lot better than many "avante guarde" mags around.
no 2/3 well printed including: gibbs/ de rook/ spatola/ bory/ vroom/ clavin/ laslo/ cobbing/ furnival/ de vree/ stojiljkovic's long set "partial eclipse", about the best signalist work i've seen.
no 4/5 a cheaper printed but larger format featuring signalists alone, some very good stuff here.
*Spruit (2) 1.75fl. ercola, 32 grote hondstraat, 2000 antwerpen, belgie. "kosmix" better produced than the real free press but not as exciting apart from "the thief" which is one of the best for ages. its worth getting for that alone.
Stepeniste by miroljub todorovic. edition signaliste, dobrinjska 3, 11000 beograd, yugoslavia. a very well printed, thick, bound book of what i assume to be todorovic' pre-signalist or non-signalist concrete poems. mostly sound poems, and with some good ideas too but much too repetative in structure. another example of a book that would be better cut by half.
Talud (5) g j eman. apartado postal no 379, merida, estado merida, venezuela. 100 page spanish text poetry magazine looking a lot like iconolatre used to.
Your Friendly Fascist rae Jones, box A487, sydney south post office, new south wales, australia. (distributed in uk by john edwards, 224 camden rd, london nw1) made in australia, and very rough production wise, very rough. its a falling to bits mimeo which is a pity since some of the poetry is reasonable indeed. perhaps as issues go on it'll come together.
no 4 adrian flavell/ peter murphy/ gerda mayer/ wendy harvey/ etc.
no 5 schumann/ robert ensor/ buttrose/ andy rose/ gerda mayer/ jane donald/ & others.
