No Two Flakes the Same
Snow has fallen
covering the grass
with a white fleece -
the night’s secret,
reminding me:
my first lesson
was about snow.
I was seven.
No two flakes the same
the teacher said,
and drew a few
on the blackboard.
I watched her hand,
enjoyed its skill.
I remember her name -
Miss Collingwood.
Fair, with a coil of hair
around each ear.
Gazing at her,
I forgot my mother.
And now
her soft words
drift back to me
when the snow falls.
