One Lovely Day
Once you gave me songs to sing,
a wide-open lock of love,
lucid eyes, touches of hair;
you were a piper, stringing
mountain melodies the sounds
flying above this urban
mass of streets paved like a worn
chessboard, but sensing smooth seas
and sand, with fancied crotchets
and whims of joy; the arcing
rainbow blessed us, and woven
ornamented flower mats
painted our pleasant turf.
In a raw town westerly
remote, I trace the last long
browning vistas, the desert
of unfulfilled fantasy
and a red sun's shuttered doors,
the henbane of parting and
last goodbye.
The bare windows
darken into night and a
soft capricious bell assaults
the near silence, startling
the sombre ravens croaking
on a bleak roof tree. There is
no answer save the chilly
clangour of a closing gate
clattering in the cold night wind.
