Second Collect at Evening Prayer
In the dream
I had to work all the photocopiers I could get hold of.
A group of us
set in motion the constant movement of paper
shuttling through the machines.
There was no time to lose. We tore open box after box
of A4 white
while the copiers spewed out reams.
We only had a lifetime to do this in
and I dared not look above my head to check the time
on the clock
but the machines had been well-oiled,
they did not let us down for they were all in good
working order
and when they all worked together
it was something close to good government.
The paper itself was whiter than white.
If you held it up to the bright light and looked at it for
long enough
you could just about make out the watermark:
Picasso's dove from the dandy-roll
and the one word that meant everything -
PEACE.
