House Without Number
Another house has risen, a doll's jail
whose gabled ends, with so scant ground
between, teach the winds a lank whistling.
Already at the doormat, photo junk mail:
a Tate Modern montage, with inner sound -
mice in the plastic coping.
Irene expects every van. No avail.
They drive like the rain, forgetting to frown.
The key-man is late, her feet are aching.
She thinks of how her partner failed
to cut her some line and hang around.
She glances at a brickie still making
houses - orange jacket on a stand-rail.
Irene pats a clod to the builder's mound.
