Libby Travassos Valdez
Pellinore
So many trees, silvered,
the colour of oats,
unfurled on the backdrop of space.
You say when he dies
we’ll set him in the stars.
One for the tip of his nose
another, the white blaze at his throat.
Two stars, faint as guttered candles,
for the place where his paws tuck under
when he lies purring at nothing
haloed in ginger light.
Strong as a hare, his hind legs will be
twin stars tilted awry:
so they fall like the moon on its back,
or one bird following another over
the arc of the world.
Libby Travassos Valdez lives in Gloucestershire where she works with sick and injured wild life, and as a plant breeder and gardener.
