Estuary Pleroma
A late January afternoon,
and I’m passing
the waterlogged flats
near Creetown.
I’ve not been down this road in years.
The telephone poles
at the side of the road
peg down what I see
like a sheet. And coming with me
from the Belfast ferry
a feeling that nothing goes away.
The silence in the car tells me
I’ve never been anywhere
but here, where there is just
estuary and hills,
the milky silt of the Galloway light
and the trees who’ve waded out
halfway to Braehead and Kirkinner.
Everything is space and movement
and light, all the way out to Culscadden
and Garlieston and back, something
that will go if I stop or try to name it
further, a fullness that comes unannounced,
as if a stranger had whispered to you
in a crowded room your true name.
Sean Martin is a filmmaker and writer. He has directed a feature film, The Notebooks of Cornelius Crow, and has written several non-fiction books including The Knights Templar: The History and Myths of the Legendary Military Order (Pocket Essentials 2004). His most recent book is Andrei Tarkovsky (Pocket Essentials 2005).
