Mistral
We wonder if it will ever stop
as it slams shutters shut
rips down muslin curtains
tears off roses' heads and sends
the washing to the next field
to grovel in the nettles.
It has snatched stars
from the sky, made them race
like startled fish across the pool
to where the cypress bends and bows
and the small striped hoopoe
cowers in the bushes.
Scattered, we hold our breath,
waiting for the pieces of the day
to settle and mend
while across the blue
a white smudge of moon moves
at its own steady pace.
