Sonnet
(after one by Michael Drayton)
In this thick fug a twisted stand-up spouts
And fries my brain with her gymnastic wit
Awakening those nearly trampled doubts
With slaps like arse and shit and fuck and prick.
But I am strong, so sister do your worst
Hard words will not turn me from lyric truth
Search for a streetwise voice, decline to curse
And not be tempted by the speak of youth.
As free verse litters every little mag
And poets two-a-penny sprout like grass
My muse will not in grungy garments sag
Like some bag-lady fallen from her class.
I turn a longing face towards the sun
And in my cheek I firmly keep my tongue.
