Fishers
up the allotments old men
on their noses
old girls on their knees
fishing in the dirt
of
ETERNITY
you may find a sort of

concentrated
a wind-carved pair
just asking to be told
In God’s sight you are
dirt waiting for the worms

cold as a mackerel on the line
snap of a fish with hands
and feet
bones softening
in the keep net
a cod with a round
blank eye knocking
in the old man’s brow
a stone four foot high with
six lines of verse and his mind
running on oak boxes and
over
apple trees setting their fruit
to the frost like little tits
all neck and hard cheek
all green optimism
