Cartography
Rubbed down with wire wool and glass paper,
creased and quartered,
the radiator pipes are relieved of their old
cracked coat.
Paint flakes, scabs of icing, dapple my bent thigh
and fall on the newspaper
groundsheet,
the Sunday Business - typically unopened
when thrown out,
but on which I now kneel in a sprint
start position.
Wedged between the wall and the glabrous sink
basin, furiously grazing,
until huddled scars mottle the white, the storks’
feathers are blotched,
to the extractor fan’s groaning reverb. Then,
rusted clusters of islands
appear whose borders bulge in a blink; so this is
more map making
or discovery, as the Faroes coalesce to Tasmania,
Cyprus segues
into Honshu, and nearer the skirting board a
jumble of the Maldives,
almost Borneo and uncharted peninsulas
revealed and me,
least alone in exploratory acts.
