Hammershoi loved doors. Doors
open or shut. He knew if he painted
a tall white open door
like the elegant
doors in this house, their
panelling edged with shade, their handles
of brass, he would see
beyond them into a landing
or passage, also in white,
where another door, shut to Hammershoi,
shut at the moment of painting,
would open in a dream
of letting enter, ushering in,
and he, through pelting white, would come
into a different
room.
