Burying Uncle Ken
He’d spent most of his life
working at the local ABC,
lighting our way to the flip-up seats.
So, it wasn’t the two soulful nieces
singing Bridge Over Troubled Water,
nor the bundle of black
held in its seat that was my aunt.
Not even the plastic grass
that dressed the mouth of the hole,
though I wobbled when I saw
the tracks left by the JCB.
No, what really got to me
was hearing the dumper truck
cough and splutter back into action,
when most of us were still
fumbling for keys in the car park,
and thinking he was, for the moment,
beneath a rectangle of sky,
a last picture-show of slow moving cloud,
and would soon himself be left
in his place in the dark.
