Volley
i.m. A J M Milne
Mist blurs the estuary this morning,
puts a soft focus on the sea,
the burnt-out moon.
After a soldier sniped out your eyes
those years ago
and your life stumbled, lost its footing,
you lit beacons, led forays
into the lands
of the one-eyed kings.
A match flares in the bowl of your pipe;
and the pine sweetness drifts
over your darkening form
recessed in an armchair
as dusk performs its slow
fade on your skin.
Mist hangs the morning
in perfect balance,
masks the sun’s cold stare.
But that hawthorn bush over there,
bolted to the coast
and bent back like a catapult,
prepares to spray
its blood-red berries
into the grey.
