16.09 Victoria to Brighton
The man opposite, reading Wilfred Thesiger’s
Arabian Sands, has an articulated backbone.
Well, two actually, - the second’s a model,
Lifesize, labelled, wrapped in clear plastic.
He holds it upright next to him, his arm protects it,
The fragment of skull droops shyly on his shoulder,
But below, it’s all there - discs, vertebrae,
(with coloured apophyses), sacrum, pubis...
As he reads, his hand warms the ischium.
I smile, but he’s far away dreaming
Of what? I wonder.
