The people of Gaza just wish for an hour’s sleep
He isn’t an official spokesperson, this man
who wants to sleep. Night after night
he’s kept awake by pin-pointed shells,
filled with incendiary rounds that ignite
to scatter poisonous bomblets
of phosphorus into the air.
A woman’s face is framed by her violet headscarf,
her features stuck in a rictus of loss.
She won’t see this newspaper photograph
exposing her tongue, her teeth.
Four men hide their eyes behind their hands
tears seep through their fingers,
soak their palms as if bathed in blood.
Outsiders looking in, we turn
to something else, our eyes smarting.
I keep wondering – why does he ask only for sleep?
