Wishes
She is wearing pyjamas and her boat
is small as a walnut shell. She didn’t
know the ocean was so big and night
so long. The pyjamas are pink with rabbits.
She managed all the buttons but forgot
her slippers and dark is sloshing round her feet.
She doesn’t know if they’re seeing
how far far out she’s got, shivering
with the night sea tossing her nut shell boat,
if they are watching from inside those voices.
Fingers in her ears and eyes tight shut
she makes her wishes, as they do in books,
that the sea will be smooth in the morning,
that they will put on their everyday voices,
that there will be cornflakes and cats purring.
