Bologna Food Hall
tell you where no tourist goes,
she said, our hotel receptionist,
this city is known for its fine food
but we Bolognians do not buy
from the operatic shows
of fish and vegetables,
See this street map,
down this alley,
through these doors?
Swing doors open
like an embrace,
a benvenuto to
an aromatic temple.
Italian, in harmonies
undulates through the air,
a vendor arranges cheeses
with the air of a lion-tamer,
dark hams hang like ash keys
from every hook,
a white laced fishmonger grins,
hands flecked with silver scales,
he folds an octopus
back on itself,
a salt flower, suckered.
Red fevers of tomatoes
piled in pyramids, fill
the air with invitation,
we squeeze past women
with art critic eyes,
ready to haggle,
picking the best.
Are there no supermarkets,
we ask, curious.
She sniffs,
only for the poor.
