School Boys Coming Home
On the tire-tracks of heavy vehicles
clean-headed school boys pause to
pick up wet pebbles.
With bent knees
and sideways twist of their bodies
they fling them into the air.
With neckties loosened,
satchel straps slipping down shoulders,
they look at their reflections in the
patterns of spilled grease
on the brown football-ground
in youthful glee.
Just like some American statues
on an ocean bank
announcing new freedom
or victories.
