A Shutter
But it is better to watch the scenario
when all is over – and if it rains.
Shutter of ha-siamna of Macchunga Point
is all wide splendor
if it rains in the morning.
It becomes rich white red and pointed black
as the dust is driven off the shutter.
It is as fresh as blood
and profuse.
Then it is nice to watch
the black glint of a crooked pearl-tooth
painted
in the rich redness of the blood
that spills on the road.
* In Mizo “ha” means “tooth” and “siam” means “make”. Therefore “ha-siamna” means either “tooth-making” or “tooth-maker”. The poem is based on the shutter of the shop of a Mizo dentist.
