Construction Site of the Elegy I
I
Mowing the October lawn - the last
before the russet horde and the grip of winter,
despair (or what else if tomorrow
doesn't exist?) grips your throat
and it’s not too much to say that one holds back tears
while stirring the green flour.
The machine beside you sputters bravely
as if it too were intoxicated
by this flow of bucolic blood
while on the threshold, the muse in an apron,
cutting short your dark reflections,
joins in, shouting ‘Watch out
for your shirt, grass stains!’ (In the end,
despair’s not so bad, it’s even
a kind of consolation, the evening’s
pill which drops without a splash
into the elixir of old lovers.)
