Listening to Showaddywaddy in the Russian Restaurant
We might have expected balalaikas,
army choirs, perhaps even ‘Lara’s Theme’
in a restaurant hung with toy troikas.
Then ‘When’ came on, bland chorus like a scream,
I was back at school again, my best friend
in love with their lead singer, Les, or Jet,
or was it Dave? There was an awful trend
for nail transfers, I had The Rubettes...
she inked her arm with 'Showaddy' in blue,
(she couldn't get the other 'waddy' on).
Back in the Russian Restaurant with you
I thought of nail transfers, Rubettes long gone
and saw ten faces bleaching to half–moons
as `When’ made way for other party tunes.
