Six poems from Anna Kühn-Cichocka’s
A Little Town With a View on the River
ANNA KÜHN-CICHOCKA (b. 1940 in Wloclawek) holds a degree in sociology and has taught at various levels, from primary school to Polish classes in secondary school. She is an artist, painting mainly in oils, and also a poet with a keen eye for visual details. She now lives in Plock, another town on the Vistula River northwest of Warsaw. Although she had never visited the small town of Dobrzyn nad Wisla (which lies between Wloclawek and Plock), a friend of hers who had grown up there told her so much about the town that she decided to write about it herself, imagining herself into the ‘feel’ of the town and its characters. In 2003 she published a poetry pamphlet called A Little Town with a View on the River (Miasteczko z widokiem na rzeke) with her imaginative re-creation
of life in Dobrzyn nad Wisla. To her surprise and gratification, people from all parts of Poland have written to her to say that she has described their own small town to a T! These poems are a selection from that series of evocative snapshots.
