Just a Trivial Observation
Man may be made happy by any trifle that comes along
Just as sadness also descends without warning
You see a woman nude between the pages of a magazine or paper
Or you hear children laughing next door
– and suddenly you grow sadA pair of doves rooting in my garden patch for food –
Why do they make me sad ?In the fields the cattle must by now have scattered to graze
Clouds will be dispersed across the sky.The crow sits on the ancient chimney
I am beginning to forget your name
You who once tried to capture the wind with me
You who feared the darkness in the depths of the soul
Time seems to stand still for me
I am not at all happy in my humanity
Man lives only to die
I am afraid I will do the same.[London, June 1997]
