Three Statues
1.
A hand, severed from body, blued into deep gray,
And yet kept its fleshy fullness, yet never rotted.
Palm up: gesture of welcome, gesture of fear.
2.
To represent flame as golden is not to represent flame:
Golden, a thin spire twisting in even revolutions—
What did Prometheus suffer for, after all?
3.
Thick thighs and a slightly protruding belly,
High breasts and hip-clasping hands—
Say Mother without turning your head.
