Driving Through Congleton in Opposite Directions
On the way back recall how it looked
on the way there, picture the space,
the same place totally different
depending on your point of view.
The Cloud, a hill beyond the viaduct
and Timbersbrook, dominating the skyline
changes profile against the grey sky
as you move. At what point putting you
most in mind of Cézanne's Mont Sainte Victoire?
It's a matter of perception or opinion.
In morning mist the goalposts move again,
the hill projected from memory
presumed still to be there.
The way back feels different too,
the whole knot of inner tensions
shaken up in the kaleidoscope
along with the landscape.
Going away, coming home.
It's a bit like that, getting older, at least
it is if you can drop your beliefs
and expectations out of the window
along the way, like so much litter
to a chorus of disapproval.
