Our Woman In Havana
Never met Graham Greene,
read his novels for O Level,
has mostly forgotten the plots
but remembers Pinkie in
Brighton Rock & his cut-throat
razor, something she has never
seen in real life. The clothes
the characters wore, assuming
the film with a baby-faced
Richard Attenborough got it
right, resemble the zoot suits
from her favourite musical
era, & would probably be
popular in Havana, which
seems to be frozen in 1956.
Only in Havana would you
find a pig tethered to a
vintage 1950's Cadillac.
The pig could outrun the car,
the petrol crisis might outlive it,
even after Fidel goes to meet Marx.
The building they are parked
outside could camouflage
the pig, the one next door
matches the Cadillac's seats.
In a hotel down the street
a group of elderly gentlemen
are playing tunes they learnt
before Castro started smoking.
English tourists are tasting Salsa.
