Peninsula
A cold day, a clear day
and a fresh wind blowing
inland from the sea. Each mile
involves a new discovery
as hills slope into barrows
and the near horizon
opens suddenly to a rim of blue
and these black-headed gulls
imploring and debating
over this disputed ground.
The island, domed and silent,
holds its course. And you
old poet, waiting at the end -
your house a mound
of weathered stones, your bed a pile
of sticks - do you reduce
the given word to signs
and portents no-one understands?
Or is it that I make my way
to you across this stretch
of ever-tapering land
to mirror my own longing
for the city you reject
by being here? Almost there
I catch the drift of anonymity:
the land mass narrows
and the heart responds.
