This divided heart
of menorah, cross, and Kabba
tears words of reconciliation
to a far future
gray as the halo hovering over
the Dome of the Rock
where gold gleams Mohammed's ascent to Allah
above catacombs preserving Abraham's sacrifice
Isaac who yields to Golgotha
locus of resurrection signifying
this divided city of peace
four thousand years its shifting strata
endure erosion, earthquake, war
harboring bloody ventricle and Lake Siloam
where walled-in chambers
of flesh and limestone
reservoirs of spiritual debris
circulate fear and hate
as this unforgiving heart of our survival
struggles bound in a knot
of blood and Light
