Before the war
A bright sunny morning,
Just right for walking. Maybe later though.
Stepping outside,
With a glass of fresh orange juice,
And two slices of lightly buttered toast,
I make my way to the summer house.
The surrounding tranquillity is only broken
By the sounds of bees, and of sea gulls crying.
On the horizon I watch
Ships from the British navy go sailing by.
War with Germany looks set to break out any time now.
The newsagent arrives -
(from what I glimpsed, the headline doesn’t look reassuring)
He’s followed by the postman -
(a bolt of panic as I imagine he has my call-up papers).
Both stop for a coffee and an apprehensive chat.
