from The Night Fountain (Selected uncollected poems)
The Flower of Silence
A little cypress, the capital of a Doric column,
and the fresh sky of the mild
majolica-coloured morning.
Sorrow, an eternal spring of good things,
here is your temple, your sacred stone
for the sleep that knows no torment.
Not the scented feathers of alcoves
but the red caresses of a lit hand
will give you, intact, the flower of silence.
