Sonnet of Power
Let lips and flesh remember the arrival
of the bright, refreshed empire. Let it be
impressed on the eyes and in memory: playing with
wine and the flight of bees is for Pilate, not for
pathetic artisans. Let this massaging of people’s
hearts and dripping of stalactites on their broad,
uncultivated bowels leave its seal on the green grass:
erasure. Therefore I ordered this delightfully
enticing nutriment to be inscribed. Let them
too become pupils for awhile, that this impatient
stamping of the ground calms down and
surrenders to the natural position of things.
Events animated me completely. Let the placard
with my office hours be hung out publicly.
