Visions
Everything was dear to me –
I wanted to look at the angry lovingly,
so that their eyes must reciprocate;
and I wanted to offer gifts to the envious and tell them
I am worthless.
. . . I heard tender swelling winds sweep through
lines of air.
And the girl
who read aloud in a lamenting voice
and the infants,
who gazed at me with huge eyes and on my return look
snuggled up,
and the far off clouds,
which gazed upon me with virtuous folded eyes.
The white pallid girls showed me their black
legs and red garters
and spoke with black fingers.
I, however pondered the far worlds
of finger flowers –
and whether I myself am there
I was hardly aware.
I saw the park: yellow-green, blue-green, red-green, violet-green,
sunny-green and shudder-green –
and listened to the blossoming orange flowers,
then I bound myself to the oval park wall and listened
to the gaunt-footed children,
who were touched with blue and streaked with grey
by the pink bows.
The tree column led lines exactly where they sat down
long around.
I pondered my coloured portrait visions,
and it struck me
that only once had I spoken
to all of them.
