The White Stuff
It’s March the first. By coincidence
we’re following the tracks of some mad March hares
as we plod in deep snow to the top of the moors.
Their footprints have dented the surface
no more than waterbugs dent the meniscus,
while we grampuses make heavy going.
The hares have skittered and skirmished
and skedaddled. Every spring
they repeat the same thing with the same enthusiasm.
They hope by repetition to abolish the past.
As we climb you talk about Italian Futurism,
about Marinetti, Boccioni and Balla
and their sound-and-fury manifestos on poetry and art.
They hoped by repudiation and intolerance
to abolish the past
(though now they’re well and truly in it).
The snow on the way down is deeper still.
We flipflop forwards and tip over backwards, unbalanced
by such quantity of the white stuff.
At least we learn as we go, and laugh.
