Using My Neighbour's Hose
I honestly hadn’t noticed
what was missing till the evening
I was watering the perpetual spinach,
when a bramble latched onto my ankle
and it all seemed suddenly a chore,
unaccountably lonely
and I registered he’d mended it –
and how much I had liked
watching that fine line of silver
shoot up at odd angles,
dodging the wet up my legs
if I didn’t position the hose carefully
so the leak would seep underneath
or throw out visible fuse-wire to grapple
a leaf; how, as I hauled in the heavy
coils to their wheel by his greenhouse,
I’d still see the rainbow spray
insisting on escaping, though I’d turned
off the water; irrepressible as the delight
I’d not even noticed I was feeling.
