Editorial
I’d like to begin by thanking those readers who have stayed with us through difficult times. We had two disasters with our last two printers, the February issue was delivered very late and the general appearance of numbers 6 and 7 was not what we would wish. We are determined not to let this happen again but, if you do get an imperfect copy, please let us know.
Nevertheless, the subscription list is growing and the outlook is bright. Many little magazines never get to Number 8 but there is every reason to believe The Interpreter’s House will continue. And I have ambitions to make it one of the best little magazines around.
Eastern Arts, who have generously supported us from the beginning, recently sent us a reader’s report. It said that we were ‘good quality’, ‘mainstream’, and ‘a magazine in the centre of tradition well worth supporting in that it seems to be open to more than a coterie’. Yes, we are mainstream in the sense that what I print is a fair sample of what I am sent. My own preference is for ‘traditional’ work, like the magnificent poem by Roy Ashwell. But little magazines ‘are often at the cutting edge of literature’ (Peter Finch), and there is plenty of room in these pages for the zany, the experimental and the slightly mad. Look and you will see.
And yes, I keep saying that we are ‘open to more than a coterie’. But I am struck by the fact that an awful lot of those I hear from are writers I already know. Understandable, but if we keep recycling the same people producing the same sort of work we are soon going to look very stale and predictable. This has made me wonder whether writers from outside the region are reluctant to submit because they think they have no chance. So let me say, whoever you are, wherever you live, I’d like to see your best new work.
