Within the sound of trains
When he wakes because of the cold and she’s not there,
he has her haunting the house in the silence
of their marriage now she’s the grown-up insomniac
far from the nightshift of girlhood. She wants
narcolepsy, hunting the drug again, quasi-uxorial,
to become foetal, dishevelled, reorientated;
calmly trapped in a carpet slumber at that spot
where the landing falls within the sound of trains
dealing for her addiction the clash of shunters,
the ache of sleepers, the tense and weeping rails.
