Outside the Emporium
Palm trees cool and green
our balcony overlooks the pool
the ground so hot I wear sandals
to the waters edge before sliding in
we help ourselves to fruit
try on our new kaftans
unwrap our gilded Kashmiri boxes
talk of the man sifting charred fragments
of paper on the rubbish tip
the woman pointing to a naked child
crouched on the pavement
in the blistering heat
the price of a coral necklace
a shattered figurine
