Making Tea for Rafael
Khadija brings me mint
picked at six o’clock this morning
outside Marrakech;
a long fragrant bundle tied with wild grass.
I pluck a leaf. In my mouth
it tastes pungent, almost bitter,
thicker than English garden mint.
My teeth crunch on grit – Saharan sand,
or just the local earth.
At home I boil water,
rinse the leaves under the cold tap,
drop them in a glass cup, dip a tea bag,
stir in a spoon of sugar
and carry the steaming glass
into the living room.
My husband is watching East Enders in his shorts,
bare legs covered with fine dark hair.
He sips his tea, this Jewish son of Babylon,
a smile spreads like dawn above the Tigris.
