Mary Jane Vane, daughter of the above.
Died - January nineteenth, nineteen
fifty-four, aged eighty-seven years.
Her clothing is of wrought gold.
Daughter of Daniel - the blade,
tamer of lions, the weathercock -
she kept his name and, by the grace
of the compact congregation, shares
his stone. Plain Jane, in a churchyard
small as the tied-cottage garden
where she was child, girl, spinster;
loyal and celibate Mary, servant
to the above in a dress
of modest worsted. They were the two
last sails on a windmill;
as he defined her
so she underlines him - and now lies
on top, two plots from the lych gate,
where lichens are spreading already.
