Monolgue
You know, it's the short-term memory
that's first to go. It's a different part
of the brain, they tell you, on courses
to train your mind. It's like a rack
of pegs in the hall you hang
coats on. One coat replaces another;
the old coat is gone, out of sight.
I suppose in the end, the pegs
break off, one by one, won't support
the weight, until there is nothing.
And you're repeating yourself
without knowing, and you don't
realise what a nuisance you are.
It's like going deaf and you keep
getting told not to speak so loud.
And it's worse in a crowd where voices
all mingle to one with no words
merely sounds and you're left
with only a memory of what it was like
to hear well. Did I tell you it's true
what they say: the most recent
things are the first you forget?
