Elmer's underused
but it's then that he's needed
when he's needed at all.
It's not a difficult job
to be yourself or what you've become
for the purpose of fun or fright;
to be thick-skinned when in truth
your skin is a wafer of Autumn;
to shed an arm for a laugh
and have it black taped back.
In time though
all the jokes are out at the elbows
and the Oklahoma Outlaw's
just so much clutter, so much space.
It's then that it's time to move on,
to be fairground bound
where The Laff in the Dark
is as hollow as he is.
