The ground opens up its mud-jawed mouth
yawning a content, self-assured yawn.
A tree - as if by instinct - adopts the role
of a hand and covers the yawn from the few
onlookers (myself included). We are
impressed enough to applaud the good
manners. The ground sighs (as the tree is
reverting with a machine-like motion to its
original position): "You'll have to excuse
me but I am frightfully tired." The fine
bass tones of the voice are immediately
winning and everyone seems to know
that it's one of those exhausted nights.
Even the street-lamps are low in energy,
half-lit, and not warding off the shadows.
