‘As the leaves take to the roads’
As the leaves take to the roads
So easily you left.
The wind dropped
And the trees straightened.
(A few tiles had been ripped from the roofs.)
The world is broken down
To be built up again.
I watched you leaving
Walking a road scarving a hill.
I stood and watched
Like a night-watching owl
Till the dark came on
The moon
That had been lord of that hill.
I understood what your back had said:
Even you are not untouchable.
