Flags of Neon
Above the town
across the moor
below afforestation
walking with speed
no destination
except
away
from the darkening day
the winter night
fast approaching
the only sound
of croaking crows -
vultures of our clime
I think of Gwyn Alf
his 'shadow-communes' -
how far away they seem
the two flags of neon
block out in light
the base of the town
gun smoke clouds
gather from the west
I'm alone on the brim
of a tip
tracked in coal-waste -
with the brooding ghosts
of Dissenters and Chartists
who will not answer my requests
streetlights are holes
in the arms of the hills
