One quarter Welsh
his blood crossed
the circuitry of border,
entered from Herefordshire’s
lip of language to speak
with words written
by a pen that quivered
in his hand
when thoughts of Cantref Mawr
passed his brow.
His ride and tall complexion
through the medley of counties,
a countryside untamed
with winter salmon of Wye,
the summer trout of Usk,
his travelogue in March and April
detailed towards St.David’s
three day stay.
A dappled mission
on routes through Wales,
the Neath quicksands,
the crwth of morning stories,
with required rest
inside castell Abertawe,
as he journeyed westwards
to Llansteffan’s pastoral mouth,
followed the noble flow of Tywi
that entered Merlin’s town
enclosed by ancient Roman walls.
After Lampeter’s dew
he continued via Strata Florida,
Llanfair, Nefyn,
north to the country’s
triangular peak of land,
to Caernarfon, Bangor,
down to the shore on Ynys Mon.
The snap of forests,
the call of tides,
thoughts in a breathing mind
with an energy of opinions
for his times.
His real landscape haunted
by the transient shadows of the birds.
